Abstract
Introduction. Full−mouth disinfection (FMD) is an original contribution to the non surgical treatment of chronic periodontitis.
Objectives. The clinical assessment of the effectiveness of an antiseptic based on phenolic volatile oils /Listerine®/ as
a part of a FMD program. The influence of such treatment on typical periodontal indicators, as well as on the reduction
of volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) in the air exhaled by patients suffering from chronic periodontitis, was evaluated.
Material and methods. The research was carried out on 40 patients with chronic periodontitis (27 women) aged 35−
52 attending the Department of Periodontology, Wroclaw Medical University. All had a minimum of 8 periodontal po−
ckets over 5mm deep; where bone loss in the alveolar process was greater than 40%, their dental hygiene was
defective (API>50%) but there general health was good. All the patients gave written consent to being treated by the
FMD program using Listerine®.
Results. In the 3 months following completion of treatment a statistically significant improvement of all the examined
indicators was found, together with a reduction in the levels of volatile sulphur compounds in the exhaled air. Conver−
sely, when subgingival rinsing using Listerine or saline solution was used on the opposite sides of the same dental arch
no statistically significant differences were detected in the average values of clinical parameters.
Conclusion. Rinsing with an agent containing volatile oils may serve as an effective alternative to other antiseptics in
a program of FMD while treating chronic periodontitis.
