Company Background
Carillion plc is one of the UK’s leading building, infrastructure
and business services companies and employs over
50,000 people. Carillion has annual revenue of around £4
billion and its operations span UK, EMEA, Canada and the
Caribbean.
Carillion provides a full range of construction and facilities
management services for its clients from the insurance,
health, education and transport sectors.
Business Challenge
One of Carillion’s major clients is a large UK insurance
company for whom Carillion conducts building and repair
work for its claimants. Carillion was initially engaged as one
of 12 Best of Breed contractors and looked after 25 percent
of building repairs for the insurer. However, Carillion were
successful in bidding to do all construction repairs for the
insurance company’s customers across the UK Network.
As such, many employees were transferred to Carillion.
The increase in the amount of work that Carillion was now
conducting for the client meant that the IT system used
to manage construction projects for claimants had to
cope with a much greater capacity. The system is used
by call center staff and managers to manage the claims
assessment process plus repair work, and needed to span
seven offices and support over 150 users.
With this capacity - an increase of five times - Carillion
had to ensure optimum performance. A surge in capacity
of this size could trigger defects in the system and cause
significant operational issues. If this happened, Carillion
would not be able to service its insurance client effectively,
a risk that Carillion was not prepared to take.
Solution
“We soon realized that testing the performance of the
system was going to be critical in ensuring its effectiveness,”
says Steve Calvert, Project Manager at Carillion Shared
Services. “We needed a partner who was going to give us
an independent view and a fresh perspective. We assessed
the merits of three different consult
