Jesus and his disciples had gone to the fishing town of Capernaum.
While they were there, the collectors of the Temple tax came to Peter
and asked him, “Does your master pay the two drachma Temple tax?”
Peter replied, “Yes, he does.” (All Jewish males over 20yearsold were to
pay this small amount every year to maintain the Temple).
Peter went into the house to talk to Jesus about it. But before he could
tell Jesus that some men had come for the Temple tax, Jesus asked
Peter a question. “What do you think Peter? When kings here on
earth collect taxes, do they collect money from their own sons or from
“From others,” Peter answered.
“You are right. The sons do not have to pay,” Jesus said. Jesus said
this because he is God’s Son and should not have to pay a tax to the
Temple. “But, we do not want to offend anyone. So, go down to the
lake and throw in your fishing line. Take the first fish you catch and
open its mouth. In it you will find a fourdrachma coin. Give it to the
men for my tax and yours.”
When finished with activities, return
all necessary items to bag and place
in the hallway for pickup.
Peter did just as Jesus had told him. He went fishing and caught a fish
with the coin in its mouth. God provided the money that was needed.
Isn’t that amazing? Our Bible verse today is a promise to remind us of
God’s love for us. “God will supply
