NATURE OF WORK
Under the direction of the Director of Community Development, the Building Official
organizes, plans and coordinates the various activities associated with the construction permit
process. The Building Official is primarily responsible for regulating the minimum standards
adopted by the State of Washington and City of Burien that safeguard life of limb, health,
property and public welfare, by regulating and controlling the design, construction, quality of
materials, use and occupancy, location and maintenance of all buildings and structures with the
City of Burien. This includes supervising and maintaining the permit, plan review processes
and inspection activities. The Building Official, in coordination with City Manager Services is
also responsible for the enforcement of nuisance ordinances and in coordination with the
Directors of Community Development and Public Facilties and Services enforces the city’s
zoning and right-of-way ordinances.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Plans, organizes and directs the programs and activities of the building inspection and plans
examination section of Community Development in accordance with the applicable laws
policies and ordinances of the City.
Performs as needed plan reviews and building inspections.
Administers the designated functions of the Building Offical in the abatement of hazards to life,
property, and public safety.
Selects, supervises, trains and evaluates enforcement and counter personnel: coordinates
training policies, employment standards, materials, and the use of testing instruments.
Researches trends and developments in the construction industry; prepares revisions to codes,
ordinances and regulations concerning code compliance and nuisance abatement; and maintains
current knowledge of legal procedures.
