All For One Week | The Communal Quiet Time
1
All For One Week | The Ocean City Summer Project
This week is all about stretching you in your understanding and experience of the Body
of Christ. Because of that, tonight’s Date Night With Jesus is going to look and feel a
little different. Tonight’s Date Night is going to be a “Group Date” with Jesus as
opposed to a one-on-one time with Him.
Here’s what we want you to do:
Get you sack dinner and get away with your group of 3 or 4 to spend time with the Lord
in community.
Read the article by Will Walker on “The Communal Quiet Time.” This is taken from the
book The Kingdom of Couches published by Cru Press.
Then, do what the article says. Read scripture together. Talk about it. Read some
more. Stop to pray about it. Talk about it and your lives. Read some more. Pray some
more. Get some custard. Talk about scripture. Pray. Repeat as necessary (including
the custard part).
The idea tonight is to try something new. A new way of relating to the Body of Christ
and to the God who exists from all eternity in community.
In the book, Will also suggests this model:
Step 1: Pick a number between 1 and 27 (There are 27 books in the New Testament)
Step 2: Turn to that book and pick a number between 1 and however many chapters
there are in that book.
Step 3: Read the passage aloud.
Step 4: Share your first impressions of the passage. This is not your interpretations!
This is just stuff you notice.
Step 5: Have everyone write down 5 questions that, if answered, would help you
understand what the passage was talking about.
Step 6: Share your questions and as a group try and find answers from the scriptures.
Remember:
1. God is God. We do not need to solve everyone’s problems, nor do we need everyone
to solve our problems. We do not determine people’s worth, nor do they determine
ours. We do not know everything there is to know, not even close. We are not God, but
God is and we approach what we say with this in mind.
2. You are you
