MANCHESTER United’s successful
run on the football field may not be
enough to save it from a sponsorship
crisis unless an Indian group comes
to its rescue, writes Aditi Khanna.
The World and European champi-
ons approached Indian cricket and
hockey sponsors Sahara after it lost
its shirt sponsor. Cash-strapped US
insurance company, AIG, decided
not to renew its sponsorship deal
when it expires at the end of the
2009-10 season.
Sahara, which has business inter-
ests across the financial, property
and media sectors, is considering
the £14-million-a-year deal. The In-
dian company is valued at around
£10 billion.
Experts believe it could prove cru-
cial not only to United’s future
sources of revenue but also to the
expansion of football in the Indian
subcontinent.
