"To think that the new economy is over is like somebody in London in 1830 saying the entire industrial revolution is over because some textile manufacturers in Manchester went broke." - Alvin Toffler "Jobs are a centuries-old concept created during the Industrial Revolution. Despite the reality that we're now deep in the Information Age, many people are studying for, or working at, or clinging to the Industrial Age idea of a safe, secure job. " - Robert Kiyosaki "Although prefabrication has a long history - the ancient Romans shipped pre-cut stone columns, pediments, and other architectural elements to their colonies in North Africa, where the numbered parts were reassembled into temples - the idea took on a new impetus with the technological advances of the Industrial Revolution. " - Martin Filler To look atall the images in this collection Art BySilent Studio Industrial Rust vol 1 "I am always struck by the fact that human awareness of our place in nature, like so much of modern science, began with the Industrial Revolution." - Kenneth R. Miller When Wally and I enter a small town our first stop is at the police station. We let the authorities know we are in the area and we're photographing so if any concerned citizen that calls in about us, the police can let them know they are aware of us. Robinson Illinois is a very unique town, the police station has regular business hours and it has a large Marathon Oil complex. The very first time we stopped at the police station we let them know what's going on, the dispatcher was a civilian rolled her eyes, and said don't take pictures of the oil refinery the security people will take away your cameras. We thanked the dispatcher, as is our custom before we start to photograph any new place, we will drive around and look at locations and scout out the area. During our scouting we found the Robinson Township Cemetery, so we went to the Township office to get permission to photograph inside the cemetery. The cemetery was a great place to take photographs since it was right up against refinery. It was virtually impossible to photograph inside the cemetery and not capture the refinery in the background. Art BySilent Studio Industrial Rust vol 1 The first time we did a Robinson shoot we did not run into security people, the second time we went to Robinson the police station was closed but we ran into a police officer who was on duty and we let the police officer know what we're doing, and he just said, "I'll let everybody else on shift know that you are in town". Our intent was to do night photography to capture the complex because of the lighting the complex would give us some dramatic images. When we started to photograph, security trucks started buzzing us, but they obviously must've called the police because they left us alone, though they followed us the whole time we were in town even when we were not near the complex. Even called in a supervisor who took down the license plate of our vehicle but there's nothing they could do because we were not violating any laws and as a result we got some excellent night photographs. Art BySilent Studio Industrial Rust vol 1 Another time when we went into Robinson we stopped, again the police station was closed, and we went looking for a police officer, when we found the officer we were starting to hand out our cards and let him know what we're doing. The officer just looked at us "We've all heard about you go ahead, have fun". This is probably a good reason why as a photographer always let the police know what you're doing especially in small towns it will save you a lot of grief in the long run as well as build good faith with the authorities.
