Biography of Reuben Weldon Ward:
Reuben W. Ward of Sackville, New Brunswick, was born in 1885. He also received his education there.
From 1902 to 1908, he was a member of the staff at the Royal Bank of Canada. In 1905, the Royal Bank
of Canada transferred him to British Columbia. Mr. Ward came to Calgary at some point between 1905
and 1910. In the latter year, he became Bookkeeper and Manager of the Company, then known as,

Shelley's Bakery. He bought the business in the last year of World Ward One, 1918, and in 1925, sold
out to Canadian Bakeries. Mr. Ward then began to assert his position in the oil and grain industry as
Director for such companies as Okalta Oil, Anglo-Canadian Oil, Home Oil and the Alberta Pacific Grain
Co.
Mr. Ward's active business life did not, however, deter him from committing himself to Calgary's civic
affairs. He was elected twice on City Council, once in 1924 and then again, in 1926.
Because of his status as a former Honourary Lieutenant Colonel of an artillery regiment, Mr. Ward was
past-Master of Perfection Lodge, No. 9, A.F. and A.M. He belonged to the Chamber of Commerce, then
the Golf and Country Club and the Ranchmen's Club, as well as being, past-President of the Calgary
Exhibition and Stampede and the Rotary Club.
Reuben W. Ward died in 1952 July, at the age of sixty-seven, at his home on Scarboro Avenue.
