Read and complete all agenda assigned work for their reading group
Research, locate, organize, evaluate and analyze a variety of digital information for a
Plan and manage their activities to complete a project in a group setting
Produce a presentation that meets the criteria for an extension learning project on the
weekly reading of, The Great Kapok Tree.
Computer Functions: For this lesson, students will
Use the search criteria determined through their research to find detailed
information about the topics mentioned in the story.
Create a PowerPoint slideshow, using one slide per animal, topic, or idea that The
Great Kapok Tree introduces. Each slide will have detail on the animal, topic, or
idea and its role in the Amazon rainforest.
Present the PowerPoint as a group to the class at the conclusion of the week’s unit
Specific Problem: The advanced students will quickly read and understand concepts and
connections of this story. The problem is that they will need more challenging
curriculum during this unit or will be bored and learning few concepts, vocabulary or
items of interest. They will need to use The Great Kapok Tree to review, research,
analyze, synthesize and present a PowerPoint to the class on the animals and topics of
concern in the story.
Research and Analysis: Students will work cooperatively to compile a list of animals
that the story weaves in. The story also includes a child, which must be included. In
addition, they will discuss and decide on the overall theme of the book and include a slide
