has
pledged
efforts to ensure that the
Tuesday presidential poll
would be free,
fair and
peaceful, even as the oppo-
sition kept up its chorus that
his followers planned to rig
this first post-war election
where his former military
chief is challenging his bid
for a second term amid a
very bitter campaign.
“The Sri Lanka govern-
ment calls for a peaceful
election and stands commit-
ted to taking whatever steps
deemed necessary to ensure
the same,” said a statement
from the President’s office.
The opposition, led by its
presidential candidate, Mr
Sarath Fonseka, has alleged
that even after an electoral
defeat, Mr Rajapaksa would
cling to power through a
military coup.
