About the Authors
Neil E. Fleshner, MD, MPH, FRCS(C), is Head of the Division of Urology at the University
Health Network (incorporating Princess Margaret Hospital) and Professor at the University of Toronto.
In addition to surgical practice, Dr. Fleshner conducts research on urologic cancer prevention, with an
emphasis on prostate cancer. Dr. Fleshner is certified in both urology and epidemiology. He earned his
MPH degree from the School of Public Health at Columbia University and completed his oncology
training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. His current projects include two randomized trials
of nutritional intervention in prostate cancer as well as laboratory work assessing oxidative biomarkers
and cell cycle regulation in prostate cancer cells exposed to micronutrients. Dr. Fleshner is an avid music
lover and father of three. He has published more than 100 scientific papers.
John Trachtenberg, MD, FRCS(C), FACS, is Director of the Prostate Centre at the Princess
Margaret Hospital of the University Health Network, and acts as a consultant to Urology Departments
at several other hospitals as well as the Ontario Cancer Foundation. He holds the prestigious Fleck
Tanenbaum Chair of Prostatic Disease at the University Health Network and University of Toronto, where
he is a full Professor in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Trachtenberg has published numerous papers and
books, and sits on many hospital and scientific committees throughout North America and Europe.
His accomplishments have earned him 18 awards, including “Man of the Year in Sciences and Medicine”
from the Canadian Prostate Cancer Research Fund.
