CORRECTIONS TRANSPORT OFFICER
SUMMARY:
Positions in this classification are responsible for transporting inmates to and from Court,
King County Jail, and other regional facilities. Incumbents ensure fair and reasonable
care and custody of inmates, and coordinate the EHD (electronic home detention)
Program, as well as the recording, safeguarding and transporting of evidence and
property. Supervises and coordinates the operations of the Property Room.
SCOPE:
Reports To: Jail Manager
Work is performed independently within established procedures and policies. Receives
general work directions from the Jail Manager. Exercises considerable judgment and
decision-making in handling emergency and sensitive matters. Assumes responsibilities
for assigned operations in the absence of the Jail Manager. Coordinates prisoner
transports and warrants and meets with outside agencies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily in a detention center but may involve a jail van or other
vehicle, exposing an incumbent to potentially dangerous people, long periods of sitting
and driving and possibly pursuing a fleeing person on foot. Pursuit situations may
require physical agility and the ability to pull an object weighing 150 pounds a distance
of 50 feet.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Coordinate and supervise electronic home detention (EHD) program: screen
applicants by review of criminal histories; approve applicants and explain home
detention guidelines, conditions, requirements and restrictions; apply ankle
transmitter; collect and audit home detention payments and deposit with the
Finance Department; document reasons for rejection; book inmates and maintain
arrest files; release from home detention; submit removal paperwork.
• Transport inmates for court appearances, psychological and medical evaluation
and treatment and other activities that require leaving the jail.
