It is our pleasure to welcome you and your child to fifth grade.
It is our hope that this will be a happy and successful school
year for your child. Our goal is to encourage your student to
become a lifelong learner and prepare them for the transition to
The fifth grade teachers use a team concept approach to
teaching. Mr. Babich is responsible for teaching all students
social studies, Mr. Lightfoot will be teaching science, and Mrs.
McDougall will be teaching reading to Mr. Babich’s class and
math to Mr. Lightfoot’s class. All other subjects will be taught
by the homeroom teacher. Former students have been thankful
for this early introduction to middle school!
The fifth grade teams four days a week (Monday-Thursday).
On most days, the students will start their day with one of their
six special classes. After their special, they will make their first
switch to one of their team teachers for a fifty minute period.
They then go back to their home room to finish off the
morning. In the afternoon, the students will make their
second switch after lunch and then return to their home room
for the remainder of the afternoon.
During this period of transition, students are expected to use a
daily planner to keep themselves organized. Each teacher will
post the daily lessons in their classrooms, and students are
expected to record all lessons in their planners. Any homework
assigned will also be highlighted. This is a critical skill that
