United Country – Bonnette Auction Co. to Offer Waterfront & Recreational Properties, Land
Tracts, Residential Lots, New Construction Homes, Timber Investment Tracts & Waterfront
(PRWEB) April 23, 2010 -- United Country – Bonnette Auction Co, LLC, will sell 80 properties located
throughout Southern Louisiana during a multi-property auction event on Saturday, May 1. The event offers a
diverse portfolio valued at more than $8 million, including residential lots and new construction homes, land,
recreational and waterfront tracts, timber investment and waterfront camps, of which 10 will be sold to the highest
bidder, regardless of price.
Four of the properties being offered without reserve are part of The Preserve at Whiskey Island, Tangipahoa
Parish’s only gated waterfront community, located in Ponchatoula. The property, designed by world-renowned
planner, John Exley, will be offered in 44 lots or in its entirety.
Whiskey Island’s documented history began in 1882 when Belgian Benedictine monks arrived on the property
from the Ponchatoula River. From 1918 to 1930, a successful prohibition-era bootlegging operation was run on
the land, resulting in the name Whiskey Island. The property was purchased and used as a private hunting
preserve in 1968 by a gentleman from New Orleans, who built a 2.5 mile, 14-foot levee encircling the 250 acre
property, creating a change in the ecology, essentially transforming lowlands into dry property and eventually into
the wildlife sanctuary it is today. The preserve is home to abundant wildlife including deer, turkey and bald
eagles, as well as thriving flora and stately live oaks. In fact, The Preserve at Whiskey Island was recognized
among the important bird areas (IBAs) of Louisiana by the Audubon Society.
In 2004, Whiskey Island was purchased and developed as a private waterfront community with 44 planned home
sites and a 120-acre common area with amenities including nature trails, Ponchatoula
