Premise for the Web Mapping Client
Web mapping technology has improved significantly in the last few years, particularly
with the advent of asynchronous technology in the Web browser environment.
Companies such as Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have leveraged such technologies in
concert with higher bandwidth connections and the availability of high resolution
imagery to render impressive mapping applications that are lightweight and do not have a
great deal of latency.
Applied Science Associates, Inc. (ASA) has developed its own Web mapping client that
allows for the integration of multiple data sources at great speed and without distinction
of the data-providers software platform. The service leverages other clients Web
Mapping Services (WMS) and combines these disparate resources to render complex data
Many data providers in the Meteorological / Oceanographic community are gathering
high quality data that previously was not being represented visually, in relation to other
geographic and/or data elements. ASA has delivered a product that can gather these
resources and compile them in one map display.
Additionally, and perhaps most significantly, ASA’s applications have paid close
attention to the need to incorporate the horizontal aspect of time in rendering the data.
Not only are current conditions available as with many “weather” map displays, but
historical and forecast data can be incremented within the map environ
