A Guiding Hand
Looking at the calendar right now, you
might wonder: Where do we go after
our Centennial?
How about The New York Times
Bestseller List?
That’s where you’ll find A Hand to
Guide Me – an inspiring collection of
stories on mentoring developed by Boys
& Girls Clubs of America Governor
Denzel Washington. Many of the
stories featured, including Denzel’s, are
by or about Club alumni.
The message of this wonderful book is as simple as it is moving: We can all
use a hand to guide us now and then. It’s a message that should inspire all
Americans to – in words as old as Scripture – “train up a child.”
Word about A Hand to Guide Me continues to grow. The book is featured on
Oprah Winfrey’s popular Web site, www.oprah.com – Denzel appeared on her
program, the Today show and other national media to promote it – and slated
for a second printing.
Our deepest gratitude goes to Denzel, who is graciously donating his royalties
to us.
And I want to pay tribute to our amazing, dedicated local Boys & Girls Club
staff, all 47,000 of them in some 4,000 locations around the world. They do
the guiding every day, changing and saving so many young lives.
The auspicious debut of A Hand To Guide Me is a terrific way to begin our
second century of service, and proof that as we look to the future, our eternal
verities – a safe place, caring adults, a positive impact – are truer than ever.
Because we have a profound influence on those around us.
So while our Centennial has come to a close, the Boys & Girls Club
Movement and its mission continue. Millions of young people are
in need of a hand to guide them.
