Log Books
The revised code of 1862, and the later Scotch Code of 1875, required every
school receiving annual grants to keep a diary or log book that could be
examined by the Inspector of schools. The Principal teacher or manager of
the school was required to make a daily entry in the school log-book briefly
detailing the ordinary progress of the school, and matters concerning the
school or its pupils or teachers for example withdrawals, cautions, illness etc
which may require to be referred to at a future time. No reflections or
opinions of a general character were to be entered in the log book. The
Inspector of Schools examined the log-book during his annual visit and a
summary of the Inspectors report on the school was required to be copied into
the log-book.
