The advanced role of OBRM in road construction and
Kensetsu Kaihatsu Limited
ABSTRACT: The Optimum Batching Ratio Method (OBRM) first developed in
1998 is a mechanical stabilisation method that has been successfully
adopted for various road projects in East and Central Africa.
Nevertheless, its limitation has been that it can only determine the opti-
mum batching ratio for two materials at any one time.
This study has focussed on advancing the OBRM to higher levels of versa-
tility. Geoscientific methods, theories, and concepts have been employed in
developing a more versatile OBRM that can realise further enhancement of
the vital engineering properties defined mainly in terms of bearing capacity,
strength and deformation resistance, which, as a consequence, results in less
use of geomaterials hence minimisation of environmental degradation.
Some important geotechnical concepts that contribute to the reduction of
impacts of road works are further discussed.
