Problems Faced while Attempting to Adjust Guitar Intonation
A guitar will only be able to produce excellent music pieces, when all its parts are in complete harmony
with each other and are working fine. From time to time, your guitar might need more attention than
usual to remain in proper functioning health. You need to maintain it well to be able to play up to your
true potential With most instruments, you may need to adjust the guitar intonation or tune them
before you can actually play some interesting stuff on it.
There are a number of things which disturb the intonation of a guitar. Improper positioning of saddles,
worn our frets, position of the bridge or bad quality strings, there can be many such similar factors.
Normally if the intonation of the guitar is sharp or flat, you just need to change the position of the
saddle to adjust it. If it’s sharp, you move the saddle away from the fingerboard and if it is flat you bring
it closer. In normal circumstances, this settles the issue. Sometimes matters might get a little baffling.
It may so happen that even after adjusting the saddle to the maximum, you are still not able to achieve
perfect intonation. Such type of difficulties arises with either kit guitars or guitars that have an
uncommon and unusual set up, to start with. Sometimes, such difficulties might be caused due a
manufacturing defect, like not placing the bridge properly etc. A little bit of tweaking is needed to set
the intonation right for such instruments. If you find that there are springs provided in between the
saddles and the bridgeplates, then some small modifications can adjust the guitar intonation. You can
either cut the springs or replace them with shorter ones, so that the string length increases marginally.
