ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN II
Positions in these classes perform technical tasks in support of a variety of engineering work.
Technical aspects of the work focus on surveying, report preparation, data collection, design
preparation, drafting and maintaining project records, or related technical engineering assignments.
Work assignments may also be involved in performing as-built inspections to assure compliance
with plans, specifications, and applicable standards. Duties are performed under the guidance and
review of employees in higher classifications. Work focuses on transforming data collected by self
and others through drafting, mathematical calculations or through the use of computer operated data
bases. Duties are performed according to standard operating procedures and policies and may
require significant public contact in explaining City codes and standards with considerable tact and
skill. Work is performed in a combination of office and field situations and may be in contact with

Independently performs technical engineering tasks of a recurring nature in support of engineering
Positions in the Engineering Technician II class are distinguished from the Engineering Technician I
by work of greater technical depth and problem solving tasks in along more specific engineering
related designing and drafting assignments. Incumbents focus more on research and technical
problem solving and may therefore exercise more independence and autonomy than the Engineering
Work is performed indoors using a computer and requiring the incumbent to sit for long periods and
outdoors visiting construction sites or surveying, exposing the employee to inclement weather and
the hazards of a construction site or traffic.
