CIVIL ENGINEER III
JOB CLASSIFICATION
GENERAL FUNCTION
Performs professional level engineering assignments in design, construction and program management for complex
municipal public works projects. Develops project scopes, produces cost estimates, design calculations, plans and
specification. Manages consultant contracts and oversees and reviews consultant designs for municipal projects.
Manages projects during construction and in supervising City inspectors, and tracking project schedules and costs.
Coordinates and provides support for work performed by City maintenance crews. Directs work of and provides
support for Civil Engineer II’s. Works independently with minimal direction. May prioritize or manage the
activities of other engineers, technicians and support staff.
REPRESENTATIVE ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Note – This list is intended only to

Prepares plans and specifications for public works projects. Ensures that design meets all applicable standards.
Performs calculations and generates design details, plans and profiles. Supervises the work performed by
engineering technicians producing project documents. Prepares cost estimates.
Manages Consultant design contracts. Develops scope of work, manages design schedule and evaluates the design
and make s recommendations to ensure that project goals are met.
Manages construction contracts and project schedule. Tracks and monitors project budget and progress payments.
Coordinates work with City maintenance crews as required and supervises engineering technicians performing
construction inspection. Ensures that work conforms to plans and specifications. Resolves conflicts with the
contractor.
