After Joseph, Mary and Jesus returned from Egypt, they moved to
Nazareth, in Galilee. The Bible tells us that Jesus grew strong. He was also
filled with wisdom and God’s grace. Jesus knew that he should obey his
parents. He probably helped them at home with chores. Joseph was a
carpenter. Jesus learned to be a carpenter by helping Joseph.
When Jesus was twelve years old, he went to Jerusalem with his parents for
the Feast of Passover. This was a special weeklong holiday which the Jews
celebrated. (They even celebrate it today!) As his parents began the journey
home, Jesus stayed behind. His parents did not know this…they thought his
was with relatives in the group of travelers. After traveling for a day, they
looked for him among the relatives. When they did not find him, they
hurried back to Jerusalem. They searched for three days before they found
him in the Temple. He was sitting with the teachers and listening to them.
He would ask questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at the great
wisdom of this 12yearold boy.
When Mary and Joseph saw him in the Temple, Mary said, “We were
worried about you! We did not know where you were.” Jesus answered,
“You should have known I would be in my Father’s house.” Jesus knew that
God was his Father.
Jesus returned home to Nazareth with Mary and Joseph. The Bible tells us
that he was obedient to his parents. He grew in size (stature), wisdom and in
favor with God and men. That means that God was pleased with him and
that he was admired or liked by people. Jesus’ mother, Mary, remembered
all these times
