Clinical Objectives

Clinical Laboratory Science Students
These general objectives apply to all work in the clinical rotations for students in the Clinical
Laboratory Science Program at the University of North Carolina. Specific tasks and objectives for
each practicum will be provided to students and instructors as part of the course syllabi.
By the conclusion of the clinical experience, the student will be able to:
Explain the principle of all methods and instruments used.
Identify the specimen, reagents, standards, media, and controls used for each test, as
applicable.
Operate instruments needed for test performance, including daily maintenance,
calibration, and quality control.
Perform routine tests (both automated and manual) efficiently, using procedures available
in the laboratory, and with minimal supervision.
Recognize spurious results and sources of error and suggest corrective action.
State reference ranges and interpret patient results as normal or abnormal.
Recognize and act upon critical results/ panic values, as appropriate.
Interpret results with respect to clinical conditions.
Suggest additional tests needed for confirmation, as appropriate.
Validate and report patient results, as appropriate.
Throughout the clinical experience, the student is expected to:
Consistently follow safety and infection control procedures.
Be prepared for each day’s work by thorough preparation and review.
Exhibit good work practices, e.g., paying attention to detail, writing legibly, minimizing
errors, and recognizing and correcting errors.
Work in an ethical and trustworthy manner, including respecting the confidentiality of
information.
Communicate appropriately, e.g., seeking guidance from staff.
Demonstrate positive personal traits and appropriate interpersonal skills.
