Conditional Use/Design Review for Additions to Batavia High School
1200 West Wilson Street (Batavia Public Schools - District 101, Applicant)
BACKGROUND
School District 101 has submitted a Conditional Use and Design Review application for phased building
additions and related site improvements at Batavia High School. In 2006, the City Council approved a
Conditional Use to establish the school as a conditional use and to allow operation of temporary classrooms in
the student parking lot. That approval mandates removal of the temporary classrooms with occupancy of
increased building space.
The property is zoned R1 Single Family Residence that allows schools as a conditional use. The majority of land
uses on adjacent properties are single and multiple family residential, except for institutional uses to the south.
The Comprehensive Plan specifies public facility and institutional uses for the subject property. The Plan
classifies Main and Wilson Streets as arterial streets, with Western Avenue and Millview Drive as major and
minor collector streets, respectively.
INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE APPLICANT
Batavia High School continues to face space constraints. To serve its growing student population, in 2006,
District 101 proposed, and the City Council approved a Conditional Use to allow four (4) temporary classrooms
on campus. At that time, District 101 acknowledged the need to add space to the building. The current proposal
would add approximately 137,000 square feet to the existing building, resulting in a total of building size of over
373,000 square feet. The High School campus covers nearly 50 acres.
