environmental
studies
Every day, the human popula-
tion places more strain on
the Earth’s natural processes
and resources. Understanding those
processes and resources, and the ways
in which they intersect with virtu-
ally all human endeavors, is vitally
important to this generation and
the ones to come. Elon University’s
Environmental Studies program is
designed to prepare an environmen-
tally aware citizenry grounded in the
multidimensional aspects of sustain-
able practice and to prepare students
for careers as environmental profes-
sionals with a deep understanding of
those issues.
Reflecting the interconnected
web of influences that affect envi-
ronmental issues, Elon’s program is
interdisciplinary; majors balance a
solid understanding of ecological
principles with related economic,
social, cultural, political, legal and
ethical issues. Majors consider envi-
ronmental issues from many perspec-
tives, exploring the balance between
human needs and the effects of
human impacts on their ecosystems.
Elon’s Environmental Studies
program is firmly rooted in active
real-world participation and field
work. Through course work, field
work, internships and independent
research, Environmental Studies
will give you a solid foundation of
experience, knowledge and under-
standing of the complex web of
interactions between humans and
the natural world. By the time you
graduate, you will be prepared to
carry those critical skills into any of a
number of postgraduate opportuni-
ties or career possibilities, from urban
planning to forestry, from wildlife
biology to environmental consulting.
First-rate Facilities
While Environmental Studies incor-
porates courses in many disciplines,
it has its foundation in ecology and
biology. The program is housed in
the $18 million McMichael Science
Center, where students have access to
a full range of the latest technologies,
laboratory equipment and facilities.
