B e it enacted by the Xenate a~td Plouse of Representatives of the-
United Xtates of R?nerica i?z Coszgrcss assen.zbled, That to provide

structures and diveiling units 1x1 the United States the Director of
the Cen~sus shall take a census of housilig in each State, the District
of Columbia, Ha~~zlii,
Puea'to Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Aliaslctz,
in llis year 1940 in conjunction with, at the same time, and as a
pt~rt of the populatioi~ inquiry of the sixteenth decennial. ceiisus.
The Director of the C'iens~~s
shall be autliorized to collect such sup-
plementary statistics (either in advance of or after the t~~king
sucli celzsus) as are ~ ~ ~ e s s a r y
to the completion tliweof.
SEC. 2, All of the provisions, inclludjng penalties, of the Act
providing for the fiftecntlz and s~ib~ecluc11t decenni~l censuses,
apl~roved el9une 18 1929 (46 Stat. 21; U. S. C., Supp. VII, title 13,
ch. 4j, shall apply to tile taking of tlie census provided for in
sectlion 1 of this Act.
SEC. 3. For the purpose of carrying. out the provisions of this
Act, there is autf-iorized to be appropriated, out of any money in
the Treasury not otllerwise appropriated, not to exceed $8,000,000
to cover the estimated cost of such census.
