Abstract: From the IT Project Management’s point of view, an ongoing
Information Technology (IT) project can be viewed through three
dimensions: Scope, Time and Budget. There will be another dimension
comes to play at the failure of the project, which is the reasons for failure or
“what went wrong”. The objective of this document is to discover this
dimension of a failed IT project in the telecommunication industry. The
Project in light has been initiated as a joint venture program by three leading
software vendors: Matrix Limited-Sri Lanka, Asiana-India and Europina-
Sweden, in 2008/09 period. The aim of the project was to provide the WiFi
(with Data and Voip) solution for a customer in Afghanistan market.
Currently the project is being carried on by the other two vendors except the
Matrix Limited since the Matrix’s software that was integrated with other
vendors got failed. Hence the discussions and analysis have been carried on
this document by having Matrix’s project in light. The introduction and
background of the Matrix Limited, and its project’s (Matrix’s CCBS) role in
this joint venture program also have been discussed in this document..
1 Introduction and Background
1.1 The Owner of the Failed Project: Matrix Limited
The successful completion of more than ten multi million software projects, fine delivery
of more than fifty average size projects, pioneer of software exporters in Sri Lanka and
pioneer of holding international software development standards. This document is
intended to analyze and discuss about a failed IT project in a software company called
Matrix Limited, having all the above success stories.
