Stormwater Drainage: Pros and Cons Stormwater drainage systems are very common in big cities and highways. They play an important part in keeping the flow of water smooth and the roads less damp. And we don’t even acknowledge their existence! But that’s alright. They were made that way. We will discuss what stormwater drainage systems are and their pros and cons. What’s the Stormwater Drainage System? The stormwater drainage system is an infrastructure that is thick and metal grated that can be seen along the side of the road and is designed to drain the excess amount of rain or groundwater from places like, pavements, streets, parking lots, sidewalks, etc. Usually, they are 1 foot wide and 1 foot deep. They are regularly maintained by the city municipality. Stormwater drainage deals with water but not with waste. The Pros of Stormwater Drainage System Safe Roads The main purpose of Stormwater Drainage System is to pave a way for the rainwater so that it can go to a designated place instead of clogging the street or raise the level of water in the streets. Stormwater drains remove the run-off water and then takes the water out of the road, thus ensuring a safe road. They also make way for ice water during the winter season. They receive water from street gutters from places like motorways and freeways and places, where there’s heavy rainfall, is regular. Protection of Home Not all places have storm drains and in those places, rainwater may not be able to flow and instead build up until it finds a way to go. It may very well find its way to a house or at least the driveway. Storm drains keep that rainwater out of the vicinity of your house. Gutters from houses and buildings can also connect to the storm drain and carry out water together. The Cons of Stormwater Drainage System Chemicals Storm drains don’t take rainwater to a water treatment plant. It just takes it to the nearest water source to reduce the water levels in the streets and nearby homes. This is a problem when you take into account the fact that lawn chemicals used to kill lawn bugs can also get drained into the storm drains and eventually reach the local water supply! Some people also dump chemicals into storm drains which can also be dangerous; this is more a human flaw than technical. We must never dump chemicals in storm drains. Technology Storm drains can be clogged by debris from the run-off water and make the storm drains more or less useless. They need regular maintenance and this is why you can see in underdeveloped countries that when there is little rainfall, the streets get flooded and people and vehicles have to move through the wastewater. Granted, their drainage systems are also not that good but their storm drains get clogged, too. Conclusion Every technology has its flaws but despite storm drains’ a few flaws, they truly are a blessing for us. Imagine without using the grated trench, if those drains stop working for only a day during the rainy season and how much trouble we will be in?
