Indian Higher Education at Cross‐Roads
y The engineering and higher education in India is at
present at cross‐roads and a number of initiatives are
being put in place by HRD Ministry for effectively
regulating and coordinating the same for achieving all
round development in the country.

percentage of educational institutions having been
accredited for quality and performance by appropriate
bodies among the ever increasing number of private
establishments in this area.
Maintenance of Quality & Standards
y The biggest concerns are about maintenance of quality
and standards in teaching and keeping up with
increasing competition in managing the resources and
campus culture suitable for achieving all‐round
development in acquisition of technical skills and
essential developments in personality and English
writing and speaking skills of students at various
levels.
y At present the situation in India is not that bleak but
not very promising either.
Access to Higher Education Increased
y Although access to education is increasing through an
ever increasing number of AICTE approved
institutions in the private sector, it is well known that
maintenance of quality in teaching and imparting high
technical skills is still a challenge for many institutions
in India.

“protectionist approach” ‐ Let us look at the positive
perspective about the possible increase in quality and
competiveness among Indian Institutions with the
entry of foreign universities into the country.

are posing real threats
