ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT ASSISTANT I
Positions in this class perform clerical and office work within various City departments, divisions or
programs. Work involves standard clerical duties of a highly procedural nature including filing,
sorting, arithmetical computations, posting data, keeping records and operating office machines.
Special operational skills, if required by a specific position, are generally acquired through on the
Reports to: Office managers, division or departmental managers.
Independently performs work of a recurring nature within clear guidelines and established
procedures allowing little discretion in completing work tasks. Work is generally performed under
close supervision and is reviewed by observation of results obtained.
The focus of this level is on work of a highly procedural nature that has little variety. Incumbents
must know how to operate a personal computer and other office machines in carrying out tasks that
are clear cut and straightforward.
Work is performed primarily in an office environment requiring hand/eye coordination in the
sustained use of a keyboard or other office equipment and requiring sitting for extended periods.
• Performs clerical work such as the posting of detailed records; makes arithmetic
computations; assists public in filling out forms; makes change and receives cash payments;
checks and maintains lists, and proofreads typed materials to verify correct spelling, syntax,
punctuation, and format.
• Acts as receptionist; answers telephone and personal inquiries; routes visitors and calls;
secures information from appropriate sources; schedules appointments.
• Sorts and files cards, correspondence, reports and other materials, alphabetically,
numerically, or by other established classification; sorts and distributes mail; prepares
