Chick Packaging Produces Custom-Built Transport Containers for FedEx
Express for Giant Pandas Journey to China
Dallas, TX, February 04, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Chick Companies, Inc., a leading global provider of
packaging and manufacturing logistics solutions, has produced custom-built transport containers for
FedEx Express to transport two giant pandas from the United States to China. Working in conjunction
with the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and Zoo Atlanta, FedEx Express will fly the
pandas non-stop from Washington's Dulles International Airport to Chengdu, China on February 4, 2010.
Tai Shan, a 4-and-a-half-year-old male panda born at the National Zoo, and Mei Lan, a 3-year old female
panda born at Zoo Atlanta, will travel in two custom-built, half-ton containers featuring sliding doors that
reveal 3/8" polycarbonate Lexan strong enough to stop a .38 caliber bullet. The windows were designed
for natural light and to allow the bears to see each other during transport. Each container is coated in a
food grade epoxy used for industrial food equipment. Water can be provided for Tai Shan and Mei Lan
easily without opening the cage.
Currently, conservationists estimate that only 1,600 pandas remain in the wild. Both Tai Shan and Mei
Lan are part of global, giant panda conservation programs. Upon arriving in Chengdu, Tai Shan will be
received by the China Wildlife Conservation Association and the Chinese Association of Zoological
Gardens will take delivery of Mei Lan.
