Conservation on the Ground -
Covington County Poster
and Essay Contest by Leigh Newby, District Education Specialist,
Andalusia, AL
The Covington County Soil and Water
Conservation District (SWCD) and
USDA-Natural Resources
Conservation Service (NRCS) hosted
an event April 15, 2003, at Oakwood
Lodge in Andalusia to recognize
poster and essay contestant winners.
The contest theme, “Food for the
Future,” enabled students to be very
creative in their presentations. A
wide range of ideas were represented
from farming aliens to organic farming
to conventional farming.
Twenty-eight classes participated in
the contest. Poster contestants were
organized into three groups: 3rd
grade, 4th through 6th grades, and 7th through 9th grades. The 3rd grade posters were judged at
the local level. The 4th through the 9th grade
posters were judged at the county level. Each
winner received a cash award and a ribbon.
Winners in the Covington County poster and essay contest,
along with district supervisors, enjoyed a time of celebration.

Posters of the winners in each category were
entered in the Area V contest.
Essay categories included junior division, 7th
through 9th grades, and senior division, 10th
through 12th grades. These winners received a
cash award and the 1st place essays were sent
to the Area V contest.
Both the poster and essay contestants did a
great job. Covington County SWCD and NRCS
staff appreciates their hard work.
