CHIEF PLANT OPERATOR (WASTEWATER)
MISSION:
The primary mission of all employees is to provide the citizens of the City of Kennewick with the most
efficient and effective service possible. Salaries are paid by the taxes, revenues, and users fees
collected from the citizens of Kennewick. Each employee is expected to treat all people with the courtesy
and respect due them at all times.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Under general direction, serves in a lead capacity responsible for operating the City's Wastewater
Treatment Plant and associated facilities to ensure compliance with the City's NPDES wastewater
discharge permit.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The employee of this class is responsible for routine maintenance and operation of the City's Wastewater
Treatment Plant and for leading, directing and supervising employees as needed on a case by case basis
to accomplish specific tasks. The Chief Plant Operator may be distinguished from the next lower level,
Plant Operator, by the additional responsibility of supervising and delegating work to others and by the
more responsible nature of work performed.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: (Illustrative only)
Operates and checks equipment, instruments, pumps, valves and meters; supervises and delegates work
to others; sets up all laboratory testing; performs laboratory analysis of wastewater samples; makes daily
inspections of mechanical and electrical operating conditions and records findings; performs general
preventive maintenance of equipment and does housekeeping work as required to maintain the
cleanliness and proper appearance of the facility; monitors control system including chlorinators and
proportioning feeder pumps and makes necessary adjustments; observes the condition of raw and
treated wastewater and makes adjustments for addition of chemicals and other additives; maintains
comprehensive records of plant performance in accordance with the con
