Conservation on the Ground –
Lee County Promotes Conservation
by Anne Miller, District Administrative Coordinator, Opelika Field Office, Alabama
The Lee County Soil and Water
Conservation District, in conjunction
with USDA-Natural Resources
Conservation Service (NRCS), takes
advantage of two community events
to promote the work of the local
conservation district.
The Lee County Fair attracts an
assortment of individuals and
provides an ideal opportunity for the
District to educate the general public
about the services available from
the local district office. The District
staffed a fair booth which featured
conservation education materials. To
attract interest to the booth, adults
attending the fair registered to win
two books—"The Plat Book of Lee County" and the Alabama Conservation District Employees
Association’s cook book, "Pleasures from the Good Earth." Adults and children alike found
items of interest at the fair booth.
The local Christmas parade is another
event that attracts a variety of
participants. The Opelika Christmas
Parade provided another opportunity for
the Soil and Water Conservation District
to promote conservation activities. The
District float, entitled “Celebrate the
Earth,” was designed and constructed
through a cooperative effort. Local
businesses donated the decorations and
Earth Team Volunteers designed and put
the float together. In addition to District
Supervisors, poster and essay contest
winners rode on the float and delivered
holiday greetings.
Jason Gardner, (l) Lee County NRCS District Conservationist ,
and Anne Miller, Lee County District Administrative Coordinator,
staffed the Conservation District’s fair booth.
