WELCOME: Welcome to Chemical Safety. This one-credit course will examine safe
laboratory practices in the chemistry laboratory including storage, labeling, and handling
of reagents, correct use of safety equipment including goggles, gloves, and hoods, use of
high-pressure gas, use of laboratory glassware, chemistry of hazardous materials, and
legal aspects of safety including 29CFR1910.1200 and 29CFR1910.1450.
CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Examines chemical safety issues with an emphasis on
issues relating to academic laboratories including handling and storage of chemicals, use
of safety equipment, electrical safety, and right-to-know and other legal aspects of safety.
PREREQUISITES: Twelve credit hours of chemistry or permission of the instructor.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
1. Describe and implement correct procedures for storing and labeling hazardous
materials in a chemistry laboratory or stockroom.
2. Correctly use safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, fire extinguishers,
eyewash fountains, and chemical fume hoods.
3. Develop a hazardous chemical communication program appropriate for use in an
academic setting.
4. Describe the most important content of federal safety legislation including
29CFR1910.1200 and 29CFR1910.1450.
5. Describe the use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS‟s) and the meanings of
the commonly used terms found therein.
6. Correctly use high-pressure gases in commonly-encountered situations.
7. Correctly use and handle common laboratory glassware.
