Why UMSL?
T he Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at
UM -St. Louis offers a hig h ly supporti ve environ ment
for its majors. Chemistry majors are assigned indi vid-
ual faculty advisors to meet with every semester who
help guide their academic program. Class si zes are
small enough that each major can recei ve sign i ficant
person al attention, in cluding in the the introductory
classes. Classes are offered both day and even ing such
that the schedules of work ing students can be accom-
modated, and the fre quency of even ing offerings is
sufficient for a student to ultimately com plete their
entire degree in the even ing. Our faculty aim to con-
tri bute to the profession al develop ment of our
majors. The Department has a research - acti ve faculty
w ho publish in intern ation ally recogn i zed journ als
and who recei ve sign i ficant research funding from
federal agen cies and other sources. The involvement
of undergraduates in research hel ps students to devel-
op their scienti fic sk i lls and makes them more attrac-
ti ve to em ployers or to graduate and profession al
schools. Chemistry majors involved in research can
gain ex perien ce with a range of state- of - the- art an a-
ly tical faci lities and can play prominent roles in facul-
ty mem bers’ research groups. Saint Louis is an acti ve
center of the chemical and li fe scien ce industries, and
the placement of our B.A. and B.S. graduates in local
industry has been excellent.
