EMPTY VASE/ VÁSA FOLAMH
Bilingual ekphrastic tanka (5-7-5-7-7 syllables), mystic poems of love,
longing and emptiness in response to artwork by various hands.
Artwork in Empty Vase/ Vása Folamh is in the Public Domain or in
the Fair Use category, i.e. an image widely available on the Internet
(Wikimedia Commons, Wikiart, etc) and used in this free book for non-
commercial purposes. For the most part, the bilingual tanka in this
ongoing series were written as spontaneous responses to works of art.
In Empty Vase/ Vása Folamh, his latest bilingual collection of
ekphrastic tanka, Gabriel Rosenstock writes in response to a wide range
of paintings in a variety of styles from romanticism, fauvism, and
impressionism to Art Nouveau and modernism. By requiring the reader to
combine body and soul, love and doubt, light and darkness, above and
below, Rosenstock’s mystic tanka serve effectively as a bridge between
the poems and the original artwork which inspired them. A unique
spontaneous conversation between three equal participants with no end
and no beginning.
Gabriel Rosenstock is a bilingual poet, tankaist,
novelist, haikuist, short story writer, playwright,
essayist and translator.
