ZEPHYR COVE, Nev.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--The launch of a pioneering project for afforestation in
several Western states was recently announced by Equinox Carbon Equities, Inc.
(www.Equinoxcarbonequities.com) in association with Carbon Credit, Inc. (“CCI”), a company established by
INET Global AG of Wil, Switzerland (www.inetglobal.ch).
Afforestation is the process of establishing a new forest by seeding or planting on non-forested land where trees have
not recently or ever existed. A planting of 3,000 trees will begin shortly at a farm in California’s Central Valley. A
spring 2009 test planting of 4,000 MegaFlora trees has resulted in 15-foot growth in just one year. A registered
trademark of Emerald Energy (http://www.emeraldplantations.com), the non-invasive hybrid species of Ironwood
and Balsa grows upwards of 50 feet in 3 years. The variety is extremely efficient as a natural carbon sink to capture
and remove CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis.
Additional farms in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona are currently being considered for the program, which ultimately is
expected to encompass 4,000 acres on four farms. It is estimated that about a million trees will be planted by the
time the project is completed in 3 to 5 years.
The project was established as a prototype carbon funding mechanism for future urban afforestation projects that
may be developed by Equinox, utilizing its new Carbon ACCESS Program™, which offers clients a wide range of
services and projects focusing on tradable environmental commodities.
“Over the next year our partners at CCI have committed approximately a quarter million dollars to develop the
entitlement process. Once the process has received validation we look to complete an Emission Reduction Purchase
Agreement, hopefully for a thirty year period,
