PURBECK SPORTS CENTRE - UPGRADING OF LEISURE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
PURPOSE OF THE REPORT
To gain approval for the upgrading of the Centre’s leisure management to the latest Windows based
version, including its extension to on-line booking and marketing.
The DOS based Microcache leisure management software in use from 1993 at the Centre will soon be
obsolete and support for the product is being withdrawn.
Although the software upgrade is free of charge to existing customers, there is a financial investment required
for updated hardware, additional proprietary software, third party software, cabling, training and data
The opportunity was taken to look at other options for leisure management software provision, but the
alternatives either did not meet the required specification or would have been more expensive to implement.
The updated software together with some additional modules provide improvements in terms of functionality
and flexibility and will help the Council to meet e-government targets set for 2005. The intention would be to
implement the upgrading of this system in two phases, phase 1 in May/June and phase 2 in
Phase 1 would involve the installation of the necessary hardware to run the new system, together with the
updated Windows based version of the standard system software, plus two additional modules. These
additional modules facilitate direct debiting and on-line credit card authorisation.
Phase 2 would involve “bolting on” two further modules, for on-line booking/paying and for direct marketing
(utilising information already held on the system to market the Centre through e mail and text messaging).
A comprehensive leisure management system is vital in order to deliver an extensive and effective
