William White. Biography.
William White was born on the island of Barbados and grew up on a small farm in
the hills overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Mom loved Beethoven ... Dad loved
quiet ... William loved to sing.
It was the time when a ride through the country roads would be filled with
music; Bob Marley and the Wailers booming at the rum shop on the corner,
Marvin Gaye out of the window of the house a little further on, Sam Cooke, then
Curtis Mayfield. The old folks were listening to Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte,
Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, and a Church Congregation could get louder than
anybody’s HiFi. Music was everywhere and although in his parents’ minds William
was to become a doctor or a lawyer … and although he didn’t quite understand
what it meant yet, he knew he was hooked … on Music.
It was then, that at the age of twelve, with a borrowed book and his mother's old
classical guitar William started writing and singing his own songs. Country music
with it s gripping texts became a fascination ... Calypso, reggae and all the
beats… His friends at school were listening to hard rock ... And William was
singing lead Tenor in The Five of Hearts, an a-cappella combo doing “Under the
Boardwalk”... As well as writing a few songs of his own. Dad was increasingly
anxious and William’s urge to leave the small Island to see the big world was
At nineteen he left Barbados for Switzerland, his mother’s home land ... and
Culture shock...! The Army ... University ... Engineering changed to Literature
and Linguistics… but he was also soon singing in and writing songs for up to four
bands at once, playing everything from reggae to funk, rock to punk and folk ...
there were simply not enough hours in a day to do everything at once… William
had to make the decision… and quit his studies.
In the years to come, besides working in bars to pay the bills, William gained
National recognition as a front man with bands like “Liz Libido”, signed contracts,
recorded albums and toured stages such as Montreux Jazz Festiv
