CLINICAL LEGAL EDUCATION AT
HARVARD LAW SCHOOL
Thank you for your participation in Harvard Law School’s Program of Clinical Legal Education.
As a supervisor, you play an important role in the practical legal education of our students. With
your guidance, Harvard Law School students will cultivate professional skills and values and
will gain valuable insight on law practice and development as attorneys.
Through experience, reflection, and group discussion, clinical education promotes critical
thinking about the conflicts and choices that professional life entails. It enhances doctrinal and
theoretical learning, and it provides an important dimension of professional training.
To assist you in supervising students, we have compiled this Supervisor Handbook, which we
hope you will find useful throughout the semester. Ongoing feedback and evaluation is critical
to ensure a successful clinical experience for our students. This Handbook, in addition to
familiarizing you with our goals and objectives, also sets forth your responsibilities and some
recommended guidelines for supervision.
If you have any questions or concerns during the course of the semester, please feel free to
contact the Office of Clinical and Pro Bono Programs:
For independent clinicals:
