Electronic mail – email
E-mail is a way of sending letters, messages, photos and computer
files using the computer. You can think of it just like the post – but
it is much quicker and cheaper.
To use email you need to be connected to the Internet and you
need your own email address. In this handout you will be helped to
decide on an email address.
What is an email address?
Just like your postal address your email address is used to find you.
It is important that no one else in the world has the same address.
An address has two parts separated by „@‟:
the first part is for your name.
the second part is usually the address of your e-mail provider.
Like this:
Your name@ISPname
So your address may look like: DaveN@aol.com
or
SuMar@btclick.com
„@‟ is a quick way of writing ‟at‟, it‟s one of the keys on your
keyboard. Note that you can‟t have spaces in an email name.

If someone else has already chosen the same name as you, you will
need to change something to make your address different. Your
provider will help you in finding an email address.
If you have a popular name like Dave or Sue, you might add on
part or all of your surname. You can even make up the name!
You can choose the first part of the email address before @. If the
email address you choose is already in use you will be offered
something as near as possible to your first choice.
Try making some email addresses for yourself.
Try some different ways of making up your part of the address -
use yahoo.co.uk for the provider address:
……………………………………………...@yahoo.co.uk
………………………………………………@yahoo.co.uk
………………………………………………@yahoo.co.uk
Remember it is best to choose an email address that is easy to
remember, and easy to spell.
