The transdisciplinary Summer School “Perception of (In-)Security and Fear of Crime” is organized
by the European Union research consortium CPSI – Changing Perceptions of Security and Inter-
ventions (EU 7th Framework Programme – FP7) and operated by the CEUSS | Center for
European Security Studies of Sigmund Freud PrivateUniversity Vienna (SFU) as a partner in this
consortium and committed to academic state-of-the art perspectives as well as practical
knowledge.
The focus of the summer school will be on citizen/public security on a broad scale, from urban
issues to terrorist threat, its determinants and measures designed to improve security. Participants
will gain insight into the determinants of actual and perceived security, and into which interventions
are effective for increasing actual and perceived security. Particular attention will be paid to the
association (and disassociation) of actual (or objective) and perceived (or subjective) security and
the determinants of how secure we, as citizens, “actually” and subjectively feel. In this regard, the
role of human factors, cultural factors, mass-communication factors and others will be explored.
The summer school’s international faculty represents CPSI consortium members and related
experts from eight countries and will provide participants with the unique opportunity to gain first-
hand knowledge of cutting-edge civil security research, at the same time practicing methods as
they are being applied and refined in actual ongoing research. Moreover, participants will learn
