Category 5 Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Project
The proposed action would provide protection to residents and
public and private businesses, located along coastal Louisiana against
catastrophic Category 5 Hurricanes storm surge impacts. The U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers has been “…directed to conduct a
comprehensive hurricane protection analysis and design at full
federal expense to develop and present a full range of flood control,
coastal restoration, and hurricane protection measures….” and
“…That the Secretary shall consider providing protection for a storm
surge equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane within the project area and
may submit reports on component areas of the larger protection
program for authorization as soon as practicable.” Environmental
analysis would be used to determine the most practical plan, which
would provide for the greatest overall public benefit. Specifically, a

Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) will
analyze the potential direct, indirect, and cumulative impacts of
implementing flood control, coastal restoration, and hurricane
protection measures for south Louisiana.
