SAMPLE STORY
For very young classes, tell Part A only.
Part A:
While Saul was still king over Israel, David was a commander in the army.
He led a group of men to fight against God’s enemies. The leaders of these
men were known as David’s Mighty Men. They were strong and courageous
soldiers. The Bible tells us that David was successful and wise because God
was with him. It is recorded many times that David would pray to God or
“Inquire of the LORD” before going into battle against an enemy. God
would tell David if he should or should not go to battle. God would tell
David how to defeat the enemy and what God would do to bring victory.
Part B:
After King Saul had died in battle against the Philistines, some people in
Israel wanted to make one of Saul’s sons king. But remember, long ago,
when David was still a young shepherd boy, God had chosen him to be the
next king of Israel. (Samuel was no longer alive to remind everyone). The
tribe of Judah, the tribe David belonged to, made him king over them. He
ruled over them in the town of Hebron. The rest of Israel chose to follow a
son of Saul, IshBosheth. It was 7 ½ years before the rest of Israel realized
that David wasGod’s chosen king. When they did decide to come together
and make David king of all Israel, they said “In the past, while Saul was
