How to Evaluate The Effectiveness of Communications
You communicate with the world every day for specific purposes. However, you usually
ask yourself "Is it the best way I communicate?" or "Is it an effective communication?".
By studying this short discussion you will find the way to evaluate the effectiveness of
your and other's communications.
1. Step 1
All will agree that communication is made for certain purposes, such as entertaining,
sympathizing, informing, advising, calling for help, expressing feelings or thinking....
and there is nothing to explain at this point. You say hello to a stranger to let him/her
know that you see him/her there. You come to a job interview to market
2. Step 2
Another which that most people will agree is that the communications should be
successful. In other words, the information needs to be exchanged successfully so
that the receivers can understand it clearly and accurately. For instance, a
Vietnamese cannot send an e-mail in English to his father if his father cannot check
e-mail or read English.
3. Step 3
We have a purpose when communicating and we transmit the information to the
receiver. Are those all things we expect from communication? If the answer is "Yes",
the effectiveness is simple. Unfortunately, the answer is "No" actually. You try to
entertain a friend when she is sad by tell a joke. But after you finish the joke, she
says "I know what you said" while remaining the same. This must be terribly different
from the case she says "Thank you. I feel better now" with a smile. In the first
situation, you cannot say that you make an effective communication. But in the
latter, you sure can.
