Agency performs the parents home study and prepares a
dossier including evidence of the parents’ financial status,
general information related to the prospective adopting family,
and anything that the Guatemalan social
worker will require to complete an evaluation of the case.
Similar information is also gathered and submitted with the I-600A.

Adoptive parents contact agency.
If child has not been identified,
Attorney looks for a child in Guatemala .
Agency contacts Guatemalan attorney and
prepares the power of attorney document that
is registered with the Guatemalan Courts.
Local attorney submits documents for
USCIS Guatemala pre-approval.
USCIS Guatemala representative
returns documents to the attorney with
a list of required documents and explains
what corrections are necessary.
Local attorney submits initial
adoption packet to USCIS Guatemala

If a relinquishment case, a USCIS Guatemala Representative
gives the attorney an authorization letter for DNA testing.
If an abandonment case, there is no DNA testing.
The case is entered into USCIS Guatemala Database.
Immigration Officer reviews documents and determines if
child meets the definition of an orphan and is eligible for
immigration to the US. Also reviews for indication of fraud.
Time frame between 3-6 weeks.
Attorney picks up the pre-approval at the Embassy and processes
the adoption through the Procuraduría General de la Nación (PGN).
Time frame usually between 4-8 weeks (depends on case)
USCIS Guatemala issues pre-approval and notifies local
attorney and parents by email (within 72 of issuance)
