ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT ASSISTANT IV
Positions in this classification have primary responsibility for coordinating and directing office operations of a
department or major division or have primary responsibility for a program having citywide impact. These
positions provide secretarial and administrative support to a department director, key managers, or assigned
departmental staff to assure efficient office operations and timely production of correspondence and reports.
While the exact nature of the subject matter that these positions may handle will vary depending on the
department, the main focus of the position is to oversee the smooth functioning of the administrative
operations of the department. These positions may serve as a key part of the departmental budgeting process
and personnel processes -- coordinating information and preparing necessary submittals as directed by
departmental managers. Positions can work under the stress of continual public and interdepartmental contact
and the pressure to meet strict deadlines. Incumbents may work with detailed, complex and sensitive
materials, exercising considerable judgment and human relation skills as a routine part of the job. Because of
the close working relationship with top level management, incumbents are expected to anticipate and identify
problems and where appropriate implement solutions. Highly sensitive issues and problems are referred to
top level managers.

Supervision: May supervise one position.
Independently performs work of a regular and recurring nature and a variety of more complex secretarial and
office managerial duties in accordance with City and departmental procedures and policies. Works under
intermittent supervision. Prioritizes and plans own work schedule.
