BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
Chancellor of the University Patrick Stew-
art officially opened the Students’ Union
during graduation week, eleven months
after the completion of the building, and then
answered questions in front of a large student
audience.
The completion of the new Students’ Union build-
ing has been documented upon much throughout
the year, with the building first coming into use in
January this year, but it has not been until gradua-
tion week that The Chancellor himself has had the
opportunity to visit and open the building.
The opening, which saw Students’ Union President
John Goodwin and the Chancellor unveil a plaque
has been eleven months in the waiting, something
The Chancellor did not fail to add to his speech, all
in good humour. “I am delighted to finally be able to
open this magnificent building, despite it being elev-
en months late. I would like to thank the students for
being so patient and not using any of the facilities in
that time, and showing great will power in not using
the bar in that time”.
Following the official opening Mr Stewart went to
a packed out Venue to undertake a question time,
which gave students the chance to put their ques-
tions to The Chancellor.
One question, “Do you feel yourself to be a York-
shireman, Englishman, Briton or European Citi-
zen?’, brought a long answer, ending with him stat-
ing that he does feel like all four depending on the
occasion but ‘On a Monday morning, in Los Angeles
reading through the Los Angeles Sunday newspa-
per looking through the pages of the sp
