Corporate Wireless Data in Europe
Negotiating the First Hurdles
The majority of Europe’s larger corporates are now out of the starting blocks with wireless
technologies such as GPRS but some have already encountered the first hurdles. The question
now is should they go over them, around them or do some hurdles simply need to be removed?
• GPRS gains acceptance amongst mainstream businesses
For the first time in this quarterly research programme, GPRS was rated above traditional fixed
line dial-up in terms of importance for remote office connectivity by European corporates. 51%
of those interviewed now have direct experience of GPRS with 24% making significant use of it.
A further 34% are either piloting or will consider GPRS in the future. This means that mobile
data is now on the agenda of 85% of European corporates.
• Early experience is reinforcing the motivation, but also revealing some significant hurdles
When asked in more detail about what they are doing with GPRS, over 46% of organizations are
active with Mobile Office (email, diary, etc), mostly with pilots or initial rollouts to small
groups of users. Field Sales and Field Service Automation are also popular applications in
certain industry sectors. This early activity has reinforced the motivation for investment. Two
thirds of organisations cite a good or compelling business case for wireless enabling the
applications that are relevant to them. But many highlight some significant hurdles.
• Hurdle 1: Mobile operator mindset and focus
